I found your podcast around Christmas ‘07 when my husband purchased me a Zune. I am a WAHM for the last 6 months and have built a website which
focuses on the family, family fun night, frugal living, etc.. I also have
been blogging for the last couple of months. I went through a mentoring
program and have learned an amazing about of things about the Internet,
online business, and Internet information in the last 4 months. Your
podcast and website have supplemented that information, encouraged me to continue down this path of information product promotion, and confirmed for me that I can make a living with an online business (although it has started off pretty slow).

I listened to an old podcast of yours about writing an eBook and it gave me the push to start one. The topic of my first book is tips for frugal family living. I would like your advice on the best avenues to promote this eBook
once it is ready to go. I am involved in several WAHM online communities and plan to advertise it there. I want to be sure that I promote it in the
best way using the most current available online resources.

First I’ll just say that your show has really grown on me and that I appreciate your down-to-earth, realist approach to internet business. Realist and internet marketer almost seem inconsistent–with the hype that is characteristic of the latter–but you guys are proving otherwise.

I’m a graduate student and freelance writer, though I started the latter only a couple of months ago. In terms of income, I am still quite amateur but I make enough every month to easily pay my nasty Boston-area rent. I’ve had a paper published in a peer-reviewed undergraduate journal but want to make the switch to information products.

My question is this: what kinds of examples are you aware of involving successful information products and/or blogs of a more technical or academic nature? Before forming a response though, please consider my context:

I’ve got a blog that is devoted specifically to Ludwig Wittgenstein’s later philosophy. This started simply as a reflection of my academic interest and activity at the time: I was finishing a rather lengthy 70 page thesis on Wittgenstein for my undergraduate degree.

As far as specificity goes, I believe philosophy blogs, in particular those targeting specific philosophers, have niche marketability. In fact, if you do a bit of keyword research, you’ll note that keywords relevant to the search term “Wittgenstein”, for example, have either high volume or low competition (and in some cases both).

In any event my blog doesn’t receive that much traffic but those who do come to my blog come to it consistently and they comment quite regularly. I also had the nice bonus of receiving positive reviews without having to ask from relevant and respectable bloggers. Some of them graduate students and one professor, I think. It’s got a Google PR of 10.

I have several ideas for an information product catered to this niche but I want to know if you have heard of any success stories involving profitable information products and/or blogging projects that were technical, academic, or even obscure to the extent that “philosophy blog about Wittgenstein’s later philosophy” is. Keep in mind, while I also want to continue to publish academically, the current question is about an information product, not an academic one.

Furthermore, I’m aware of the (somewhat dogmatic) response that is usually given when it comes to writing for information products and/or web content: keep it simple, don’t confuse your audience (et cetera). And I’m also aware that you guys are the only ones who actually referred to exceptions–can’t remember the exact podcast–and one of you mentioned niche markets that were basically comfortable and/or expectant of more formal or technical wording. I’m just saying this to a) thank you, as a popular internet marketing resource, in expressing this exception and b) acknowledge that the K.I.S.S. rule just doesn’t apply to people who would be interested in Wittgenstein’s later philosophy.

Thanks for listening. That sounds like a great niche for an ebook. The best way to promote it if your list is just getting started is to find people who already have a list and do a joint venture deal with them. They promote your book and get a fraction of sales. Use this to build your own list, start your cash flow and provide value to your partners and their communities.
