Thinking About MoneyNOTE: This post is best read while listening to Pink Floyd’s Money. Please click here to open it in a new window. It will start playing on its own.

People spend a lot of time thinking about money. In fact, we may think about money more than we think about sex. Your beliefs about money significantly impact your life and business. Whether you’re conscious of these beliefs or not, they conduct your behavior on a daily basis. Do you have money beliefs holding you back?

As I look back over the last several years and my progress as an entrepreneur, most of the critical mindset shifts I’ve gone through relate to money in one way or another. Later this month we’re dedicating an episode of the Internet Business Mastery podcast to discussing the meaning of money. But first we want to know what money means to you?

In the poll below you will see a list of belief statements about money. Please take a few minutes to place a check next to each of the statements that you believe to be true.

Also, let us know in the comments below about your relationship with money and how it has affected your progress as an internet entrepreneur. If there are beliefs that you have that are not listed here, please share them in the comments as well. You can post anonymously if you prefer.

Your input will help us address this subject and hopefully share some insights that will improve your relationship with and respect for money.

What does money mean to you? Check next to the statemetents below that you believe to be true regarding money.

I am SO happy you added the question about the yak!!!

What plugin did you use for this poll, it’s awesome! Including it in the post itself rather than sending someone offsite is such a great way to get a good response rate.

As far as my relationship with money, I used to have a lot of those limiting beliefs you include in the poll. Hell, I used to have ALL of them! But letting go of them along with a lot of other negative beliefs has made such an incredible difference in my life. Heck, just yesterday I was asked to be a staff writer at ReveNews.com and the traffic on my site has increased 6 times over since December.

Lest we have any doubters out there, 100% of my success has come from listening to IBM! (oh, and drinking yak’s milk every morning)

Voted Yak, but of course, Yak is just a symbol representing the ability to lead a somewhat normal Manhattan lifestyle, whereas for you, it’s an actual Yak. I also don’t want to get ripped off by clients, and this poll question is interesting looking at the conversation we just ahd like three minutes ago. Timing, curse YOU!!!!

Dear Sterling and Jay,

First, I want to say I love the podcast and tonight have donated $30 as a show of my thanks for your amazing efforts at creating something of tremendous value and giving it away for free. I am excited to say that I have just contracted with someone at e-lance to do some leg work for me and will be launching my first income generating website in exactly two weeks, all thanks to you.

My dilemma is this…I am new to internet marketing and am not ready to make the financial leap to your coaching coarse, at least not yet. While I have no doubt that the course is 100% worth it, my wife views the payment for the course as a mortgage and car payment. I am also concerned that your course may simply be too much for me at this stage. It seems as though I would be going from grade school straight to college, missing high school and the awkwardness of puberty (to stretch an anology MUCH too far).

What I really need is to expand on the material in your podcast, but to an intermediate degree. I am looking for a great beginner’s product that gives an awesome foundation, and does not exceed $300. I wish this was something you produced but alas, I didn’t see anything like it on your website.

Please let me know if there is a product like what I am describing from you or someone that you trust that gets your seal of approval and send me (or post) an appropriate link to ensure you at least receive affiliate credit.

Thanks for all you do,

Adam

PS…I really wish you created an introductory product and I’m sure many of your listeners do as well. Quite frankly, I’m surprised that you’re bypassing the sales funnel model with your approach.

Money is FREEDOM! You can do a lot when you free up time and money. I can’t wait to be free from money worries and have time to do what I want. I am working on ways to make some passive income streams work for me. Thanks to you guys for recommending the book 4-Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss, I know complete freedom is possible and also the steps I need to take to automate a business. Defining how much passive income is enough for the type of lifestyle you want to live seems to be the most important step or else you won’t have a clear income goal. Thanks for this post! I’m looking forward to reading the comments.

Cheers,
Eric

@Adam,

We will have more entry level options at a lower price later this year. Keep your eyes open for them in Q2 and Q3.

@Chris,

The plugin we used is aptly called WP-Poll. It’s a nifty little Ajax-y plugin.

Tha’ts great news. If you have an e-mail alert system, please add me to it.

Jay and Sterling,

First of all, I love the podcast and have been playing catchup for the last month or so. I’ve gotten a lot of good information and inspiration from you and I hope to take one of your courses in the near future.

As for the money question, I am in a situation where all my money is going to support my family and my lifestyle (meager though it is), therefore I have been utilizing all of the free resources out there and doing all the legwork on my own.

I have been working on several internet businesses but have not had the one break through to get me to the next level. My current plan is to build up a nest egg to a level where I can invest in some training and have someone else design the sites and write the sales letters for me.

I hope to give up the day job sometime this year and devote 100% of my time to businesses of my own.

Keep up the good work, and again, thank you for all of the great information.

Dan Tervo

Hey Adam,

The basics are quite simple for creating an online business that produces incomes. I am not so sure about the future of business for content providers (i think that ultimately, all content will become free, and supported by advertising, unless very specific/unique content is provided). Thus, I would advise you to:

1- Define a very niche/specific market you want to reach
2- Advertise one full page in a magazine focusing on that market with a free offer to collect contact details (ie: email addresses)
3- Keep working on that database of clients and always try to grow it
4- Listen to what your clients want (you need to ask them first!!)
5- Sell relevant things: on first items, you might not make big bucks. But the most imporrtant is to start a conversation withy our audience. then the rest will follow.

Keep this in mind: it’s much easier to find products for your clients, than to find clients for your product.

Hope this help!

Sterling and Jay.

First of all I want to commend you on such great presentation as marketers. You shine bright with integrity in a division of the marketing world where honesty and straightforwardness often lacks.

I have been following your podcast for about 2 years now and I have never been disappointed with a show or recommendation. My web blog was once put in a list of 5 “no brainer” sites on a list of marketing resource material along with your podcast and it even though it was just a Squidoo lens it made me happy that a member of our IM community saw me as making the top 5 resources just a couple places below Jay and Sterling, the two that I see as being gurus of the industry.

Since this is my first comment to your blog I just wanted to get that little gush of appreciation out.

I am a firm believer in the “Law of Attraction” that our positive energy towards a subject matter will bring more of that subject matter our way. This I finds hold true to wealth. Wealth in it’s most basic form is currency.

A fact that may surprise you is that only a small percentage of the perceived wealth in the world is tangible:

“Physical paper money does not even represent money in full. It cannot reasonably do that. By some estimates (and this varies from nation to nation), only as little as 4% of the money in the banks exists as paper cash. Imagine how much cotton, linen, pulp, and metal the world would need so as to make all the money everyone has in his or her bank accounts. Imagine how much space it would take to store all this money in paper form. If you were to stack only one million US$1 bills, it would weigh one ton and be 361ft high. Neither does money exist as gold reserves anymore. This is for exactly the same reason — we ran out of the reasonable ability to keep a gold standard in the 1970’s. So what does it exist as, the money that we are always talking about? Well it is one massive illusion. It is all just numbers written on paper and computer storage devices, and assigned to people and entities such as companies and investments, or more accurately, further records! To put it in another way, for every $100 or its equivalent in any other currency, only about $4 exists as printed paper notes or coins, while the remaining $96 exists as numbers written on papers and computers in banks and businesses and other entities. The only reason this system does not collapse is that we all believe in it. ”

The above two paragraphs were quoted from “Happy Pocket Full of Money” written by David Cameron Gikandi.

The point being that 96% of money is based upon belief. If you believe you have a product or service of value then that belief alone can help you to attain a percentage of what is out there waiting to be shared. There is no shortage of money to go around as long as there is no shortage in belief of money and value.

So go out there and dream, create, market and thrive…and listen to Jay and Sterling. They’ve got it down.

I’m reminded of something that Michael Geoghegan said at last year’s New Media Expo when talking about currency. He said that currency doesn’t have to be money. It could be recognition in your marketplace, general fame, time, but not necessarily cash. Success is measured in many ways and the most important is that your business provides the means to meet or exceed your personal goals. To healthy yaks! Good stuff as always, guys!
