Watch One of My Internet Businesses Being Built…Right Here on This Blog

29 Feb 2008 Jay (Jason Van Orden) 18 Comments

Genesis of an Internet Business I’m making a commitment to you right here and now. I’m going to show you to share with you the genesis of my latest online business here on the Internet Business Mastery blog.

Actually, it’s going to be my wife and virtual assistants doing most of the work, but I will track the progress on this blog. So here’s the premise and the plan for sharing it with you.

Target Market

Our goal is to create a place for entrepreneurs and other creative, passionate people who either already have or want to create freedom of location and a lifestyle where they can live abroad and travel as much as they want (even perpetually).

By now you have probably guessed that this ideas finds it roots in my recent move to Buenos Aires with my wife and our plans to live abroad for the next few years.

We’ve found that there are rapidly increasing numbers of people who are pursuing this lifestyle. Certainly The Four-Hour Workweek has brought more awareness of it, but it has been a rising trend for quite some time thanks to the Internet and global economy.

Site Purpose

The long-term vision of this site is to create a community and information hub to help people start and run a mobile business that brings them a lifestyle of freedom even on a modest income.

If you don’t have a business that creates location independence, it will help you start one. If you already have a business, but lack the independence, it will help you create that freedom. If you already enjoy freedom of location, it will provide further help and inspiration for living a lifestyle of independence.

It will also give a place for you to find friends and belonging since traveling perpetually can make it hard to find and maintain connections.

Tracking the Progress

So from time to time I will post here about the progress of the business. My hope it is to:

  • Provide you with insights and inspiration for your own business
  • Get your feedback and ideas for the site
  • Have a project that the entire Internet Business Mastery community can follow and even contribute to
  • Create a record that I can refer back to
  • Provide additional motivation and accountability for my wife and I as we put the business together

I’ll have more for you very soon. In the meantime, what thoughts do you have about the target market and business purpose?

I am very interested in following this thread. I know we will learn a lot from your williness to (once again) share what you are doing in a way that makes it do-able for the regular folks just trying to run their homes, jobs and lives while building their online business. You guys are brilliant!

Well, this certainly fits in with the ultimate goal for my website, maybe I should direct my audience through to this thread, what an intro to IBM!

Hi Jay,
Hope you are enjoying the Internet traveling lifestyle. That was exactly my goal to to be able to work from anywhere - that’s why I’ve been working like a madman. But whereas you went to BA I’m going the opposite way. Kathy retired from her day job and in June we will be going to our home in Alaska.
I’ll be eagerly following your plans here. You always were willing to share great information that was on target and without the superheated-hype you find so often on the net. I’m sure this will be the same.

All the best,

As always Jay the information you provide is exciting and informative. I am hoping to do the same thing when I get married in the next couple of years an extended honeymoon overseas so will be watching closely. As a side note I am taking the IBM Coaching Course right now and it is unbelievable the amount of tools and tips you guys are providing, Thank You. I would highly recommend it to anyone who may be considering it. Should have my first business up and running within the next few months.

Good Luck and keep us informed

This is a wonderful idea Jay. I’m guessing there really is a large group of people out there that are after location independence. Thanks for putting this project on public display. I’m sure you will find we will support this as well as learn from it.

Pat

Does anyone know how to set up your wordpress sidebar Like this site? Is there a plugin I/m not seeing? I want to add the rss and Itunes Icons like they have here.

thanx,
Kevin

Jay and Sterling,

What is your opinion on installing multiple domains on one host. I currently use POW for hosting. To simplify, what I mean:

http://www.domainname1.com has its own blog site
http://www.domainname2.com has its own blog site
Bolth hosted on one hosting account.

Would SEO work the same?

thanx,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Hope Sterling and Jay don’t mind me stepping in and responding. I have a fairly large DreamHost account and have about 25 active sites and a few more dormant. From the SEO point of view I haven’t seen any negative effects. The negative effects occur if all of your links come from the same IP address as they would if they were all on the same server at the same host. So if your goal was to put up multiple blogs in the same host, interlink them all to build your link love that wouldn’t work too well. When I first started out the person I was learning from had a strategy of choosing 10 hosting companies and hosting 10 domains a piece at each and interlinking them. That way the search engines would see your links as comming from different IP addresses. That was more effective but a lot of trouble and expense. There are better ways to get valuable links and boost your SEO rating. But hosting a few blogs on the same host isn’t going to present a big problem. More important to the success of your blog is fresh, unique relevant content, that you make known through the various social tools that I’m sure Jay and Sterling will show you. Jay hope you are enjoying BA. Sterling and Jay -feel free to correct me if your experience is different - After all this is your house!

All the best,

Thanks Jay and Sterling - I’ll be keeping an eye on this one. Sometimes you guys give so much info and inspiration that I can’t decide where to start! This should add some perspective.

I am looking forward to this blog within IBM…

From what i gather the ideal business is something that can be downloaded or given electronically… Then marketed and sold online… What do you recommend that to be or how does a person come to that product…? Then test it…?

Can you guys create a forum which has commercial in confidence… As i have many ideas and questions but can not release them into the main stream…

I am really excited and looking forward to the watching this start-up grow…

One last question what is the domain name…?

:) Thank you Max :)

@Kevin,

Ted is dead on. Thanks for chiming in Ted.

@Max,

Our coaching course goes in depth into how to pick your niche and create your product. We also talk about this some in past episodes. You have the right idea about e-products being ideal

The domain of my new site will be revealed soon!

Great idea Jay,
I will follow this closely and I am certain it will be a very active meeting place for us entrepreneurs. ! Looing forward to see your initiative!

Best regards, Axl.

Wow! I’m very interested in following this. This is the type of thing that will have following this site a lot more than I already do. Thanks for the value!

I look very forward to following your progress with this new venture. Having been involved with Internet business for some time now, it always fascinating to see what others may do the same or differently from what I have done in the past. It sounds like you have a pretty good structure in place already, so I would expect that you will do just fine. Good luck, I can’t wait to see what you do.

Hi Jason & Melanie,

Terrence and I are looking very forward to what’s to come. You guys are truly an inspiration to us! Before long we’ll be visiting you all in Buenos Aires :-)

Warmest Regards,

Terrence & Melorie Bennett

@Kevin,

I currently run something like 7 sites off one POW hosting sites and with all the ways to get links and drive traffic I haven’t worried about the downsides. I agree with Ted above….

You mentioned working with entrepreneurs and other creative fields. I could use some marketing help with my copywriting and creative internet-based service. I’m all ears, best of luck!

Oh and I just came back from Korea and want to leave in Sept. to Rajasthan. Can you send any advice how to have and maintain clients while travelling?

@Max & Sterling/Jay,

I also think it would be useful to be able to post “commercial in confidence” posts. I am currently developing a business that pulls together a new way of operating in a particular market, and as no one has done this before, I’m keen not to give too much away!

Mark.
