It’s my first blog post on the IBM blog, and I am so excited to talk with you! Hi! I’m Melanie, Jay’s wife. I’m here to continue the special series that Jay began on this blog about our new project.
If you’ve been following this blog for the past few months, you know that Jay and I have been building a new website for people who want to travel the world while running an online business. Jay decided that he would like to share our experience building this business with you.
He left off with a blog post about different strategies for choosing a domain name for your business. He promised to reveal our new domain name to you and to tell you the strategy we used in choosing it. Well, the time has finally come. The site is ready to launch, and we are ready to reveal it to you!
Our Strategy
Our target market is such that we decided that it would be too difficult to go with a keyword-based approach for our domain name. The kind of longterm travel we talk about on the site is not described in popular keywords. Most people search for “live abroad” or “work and live abroad” to find information related to what we talk about on our new site. Those keyword are already dominated by other sites that talk about permanently living in a foreign country, usually tied to a particular, geographically-bound job.
On our site, we focus on the kind of travel that we are currently experiencing–a nomadic adventure going from country to country every few months, fueled by our internet businesses. We decided that it would be much better to go with a branded approach, with a catchy name that would be memorable and easy to pass along to a friend who might be interested in what we do.
After all, the kind of lifestyle that our site talks about is an exciting, even surprising concept that most people find pretty remarkable. We thought that word-of-mouth and cross promotion with other sites like ours would be our best marketing tools.
Our URL
We wanted a domain name that communicates what our site is about while generating excitement about the travel lifestyle information that we offer. We decided that the most exciting description of this lifestyle is “becoming a part of the jet set.” We’ve heard the terms nomad, hobo and wanderer to describe this kind of travel, but we felt that those terms communicate a “bargain” or “shoestring budget” kind of travel, which is not the kind of travel we talk about.
We focus on living a more luxurious lifestyle while traveling abroad, either through making more money through your own internet business, or through traveling to appealing locations where your money will go further.
We currently live in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a beautiful and cosmopolitan city where the dollar is still worth much more than in the US. We live much more luxuriously here than we ever did in Manhattan, or than we would in many US cities. We also fly much more than we ever did due to returning to the US for essential events and moving to different locations every few months. We feel that “jet set” properly describes this new lifestyle.
We also wanted to communicate to people that they don’t have to wait until retirement to join the jet set. They can take their destiny into their own hands and fund their international travels with an internet business or through working remotely. So, we decided to add a word to “jet set” to communicate that reality. That makes our new domain name:
JetSetNow.com
At Jet Set Now, you will learn more intimate details about Jay and me; about how we used to be like millions of Americans who slave away at jobs that bring them no fulfillment and tie them down. (Sound familiar?) Please join us at Jet Set Now to learn how to create a location independent business that allows you to live the travel lifestyle of your dreams. We offer a free email e-course about the seven biggest concerns that people face when considering (or living), a jet set lifestyle and how we overcame them.
So, what do you think of our new domain name? And what do you think of the new site? Please share your thoughts or suggestions in the comments.
I like the idea of the new site and look forward to seeing how it develops. I’ve already read the first two posts.
