Books:

This is one area I had to do some house cleaning on. Here was the list of books I was reading… all at the same time:

  • The Meme Machine by Susan Blackmore – book about memes and the study of mind viruses.

  • Virus of the Mind by Richard Brodie – book about memes and the study of mind viruses.

There was one other Mind Virus book that I cannot remember…

Now I am reading only one non-fiction at a time and adding a FICTION, gulp. I haven’t read a work of fiction for SO long I cannot even remember the last one! When I did read it I actually liked fantasy, so I decided to give that a try. Here are the TWO books I am reading now:

I have actually found it sort of hard to get into the fiction book. My mind works differently now, it is hard to shut off while reading, but I’m going to keep trying as I used to love reading fiction.

I have a book you might like to read Sterling. It’s called “The Celestine Prophecy”. I read it a number of years ago. A friend of mine gave it to me and It was VERY hard to put it down. I hope you put it on your list. Who knows, it might change your life…

Hey Mike,

I actually read the Celestine Prophecy many years ago and found it very interesting and entertaining. Your right, it was very hard to put down!

I am halfway through 4 hour work week (audio).

Loving it thus far. It has really opened my eyes to many different areas.

I am planning on mini retirement in 2010 (2 months of work, one month off)

Hi Sterling,

Knowing of your addictive tendancies, I’m being naughty to suggest this…

The best ‘thinking man’s escapism’ is Patrick O’Brian’s Jack Aubrey series of books - you may have seen the Russell Crowe film ‘Master & Commander’ that gives a flavour, but none of the depth. Strategy, intrigue, battles, friendships, plus lots of arcane navel terms that gently and calmingly wash over you. Brilliantly researched, written and characterised, not to mention a jolly good yarn (also makes you realise how much of our language comes from old navel and sailing terms!)

Be careful you don’t get hooked - there are about 13 of them. I’m on my third reading.

@ Dean

Why the wait??? 2010 is a long way off! What about a mini retirement at the end of THIS year?!?!?!

@ Ronna!

Very naughty indeed! I’ll see if I can get into this FANASTIC fantasy series, I loved the first 3 books, and if not I’ll give yours a try!

I too have been reading the books you have mentioned about mind viruses and memes. In fact I realize that I was polluted by them most of my life. Once you know about them, you realize what an epidemic we have in society. The real challenge is trying to cure them. I recently read another book on the danger of memes, “Why You’re Dumb, Sick, and Broke…” by prosperity trainer Randy Gage. It discusses the socioeconomic impact of such mind viruses on both a large scale and on the individual level.

@Tim,

Thanks for the recommendation, I just put a hold on it at the library! I love those kinds of books!

Sterling

@Tim,

Got the book and read it in one day, fascinating! I like how he use the mind virus stuff as his angle instead of just generic self help!

Great read, I’m going to go through it again as a quick read…

I wish I knew him, I have some tips on how to make the book even easier to read! hehe…

Hey Sterling, which do you prefer, reading books or reading online information like blogs and the like?

@Jonathan,

I actually prefer reading books, cause I can go get comfortable in a way I cannot with a laptop. I actually print out blog posts and the like so I can go get the same comfort level by reading in my bed or several other places!
